THE QUEEN OF THE MARITIME ALPS
In the early 20th century, Limone Piemonte was one of the cradles of skiing in Italy. Very snowy in the winter and particularly suited to excursions during the other months, thanks to the railway that connects it to the cities of Piedmont and Liguria and to the Côte d’Azur, it has always developed separately from the other parts of the region. The ski lifts are modern and rapid, the numerous Alpine huts are great places to re-charge your batteries during the day and let you hair down in the evening. At the forefront of the promotion of sustainable tourism and of efforts to pedestrianise the area in order to enhance mobility, it has a historic centre that features typical Alpine architecture embellished by a 12th-century church. It plays host to all of the main amenities you would expect, as well as a major ski school, which even supported the excellent Italian World Cup Alpine ski racer Marta Bassino. In the summer, the cable car and the chair lift (complete with attachments for bikes) make it easy to immerse yourself in downhill skiing. For excursions on foot, by mountain bike, on a motorbike or with an off-road vehicle, the Via del Sale offers everything you could possibly imagine: stretching for more than 100 km, it is an ancient route that, passing through the Valle delle Meraviglie (Valley of Marvels), crosses into France and runs from the Alps to the sea.
